📣Podcast version of this Memo
Personal accountability is a crucial asset for getting anything I want in life. If I only say what I truly mean, I can be confident in my ability to execute it. My accountability becomes an asset of its own that guarantees my commitment to my word. Daily habits, commitments, responsibilities, promises - all of those are a chance to really see how accountable I am towards the things I commit to.
Analyzing my daily accountability helped me realize that modifying my commitments to make them actually achievable is a huge part of accountability. Anyone who has tried to keep a daily habit tracker or set a New Year resolution knows how overwhelming the lists are in practice. So accountability is not just sticking with the plan, but it’s designing a smart plan from the ground up.
Discipline, which is usually associated with accountability, is a final part of the whole equation. True accountability is about kind design of a system that can be successfully navigated by its user. How do I choose the habits, and make the promises that I want and can keep? How do I choose the realms where it’s natural for my accountability to shine through? Because the ultimate gift of accountability is a sense of undeniable self-confidence that acts as a reinforcing loop toward higher levels of self-trust, and therefore achievement.
