Jeremiah is sampling a new shirt. He asks us: “Is it a phenomenal “yes” or a “no”?” Instead of asking “Do you like it?” and us answering “Kinda”, he makes it easy for us to be honest. You can’t lie about something being phenomenal. Similarly, some decisions are binary.
You're either on the bus or off the bus is a quote by Ken Kesey that encapsulates this principle. Some choices are binary: there is no middle ground. First off, I want to be good at distinguishing between binary and multi-dimensional decisions. Secondly, I want to be clear on making those binary choices. Lastly, I can further break down the multi-dimensional decisions into more manageable binary micro-steps. Because at each point in time I am only effectively making one decision.
Binary questions I want to ask myself:
Am I truly focused on the most important things in life?
Am I massively pursuing a goal? Am I doing my best?
Do I look my most beautiful self?
Do I love this person?
There is no confusion, there is no “maybe”, or “kinda”. It is either a “Yes!”, or a “No”. I am either on the bus or off the bus.
